I would wholeheartedly endorse Joe Woods barrel coning tools, especially in the .32 caliber. Those tiny balls are so easy to drop while reaching for the short starter. Especially when your hands are cold. No problem after coning, simply place the patch over the barrel, and press the tiny .310...- rusticbob

Took my newly coned .32 Crockett to the range today. I cannot believe how well this gun shoots, maybe it just fits me well. Here is a picture I took of the last target I shot today. What are your favorite Thompson Center (T/C) Percussion guns?
I have all hunting guns, no safe queens. My favorite T/C hunting gun is a White Mtn Carbine. Was a 50 when I bought it, but had a trashed barrel. Sent it to Bob Hoyt and he bored it out to .54 with a 1/48” twist. Light and accurate- rusticbob

My Crockett is probably my favorite mz right now. Cheap to shoot and easier to load now that I coned the barrel with a Joe Wood tool. As accurate as I will ever be with open sights. I need no other for fun shooting!- rusticbob

2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........
I just coned the barrel of my .32 Crockett. Those tiny balls and and my big fingers make loading, especially with gloves on was pretty impossible. The balls start easy now with thumb pressure, and loading is much easier. Love this gun. Unfortunately where I live in Vermont we only have a fall...- rusticbob

Remove butt plate for finishing?
I do, but others may differ. The butt will occasionally sit on the wet ground, at least my gun does. I do not want any moisture entering and swelling, or discoloring the stock .- rusticbob

My thoughts entirely, by smashing the ball , it’s possible to flatten the top, which cannot help accuracy. Plus it’s a pain in the ass when your hands are stiff and cold when our December muzzleloader season starts here in Vermont. Now that I have your attention Jim, can I get your opinion on “coning” a barrel? I have “coned” T/C barrels, and with round ball they are much easier to load in the field. Baker .40 cal 1/2 stock value
Went back to the Antique Mall today to look at the C.Baker rifle again. Brought a bore light this time. Good bore, but rifling seems to have very little twist to it.
