    Brightening up my Sight

You do whatever works. I've had a rifle with a steel blade front and a High Viz of the same height that I interchanged depending on if I was hunting in dim light or shooting in a match on a sunny day. Some kind of a peep rear sight with a big ol' hole in it does wonders for old eyes too.

shooting .44 cal balls from .45 cal rifle

I killed a javalina with a bare .451 ball after I flat missed the darn thing with a patched .440. I carried a couple of .451's in my pocket for a quick follow up shot.

    Lock Collecting?

What you have is known as a back action lock. They are, or were, common on shotguns as well as on some rifles. They seem to be pretty scarce and I always am on the lookout for them since I like building back action lock rifles. L&R makes new ones but the quality isn't anywhere near what the...

    Type of Jag ?

There's probably a hundred types of jags. For me, the short ones are too short to use with a ramrod. There's not enough of the ramrod left sticking out to grip it. The longer the jag the better in that respect. I carry a jag extender in my hunting gear for that reason. As far as holding a patch...

SOLD 54 Caliber Flintlock Pistol Sold pending funds

This was built in the 1970's. It has a small Siler lock and a Sharon barrel. It has seldom been fired in those 50 some years and the bore is excellent. Asking $475 shipped at my expense. 3 day inspection period after it's been received except for the postage. Located south of Tucson, Arizona...

Coning done to Parker Hale Volunteer Rifle

I've coned several of my round ball rifles and they shot as well, if not better, than when unconed. That's a different subject I know but before you do anything shoot it a lot and see how it shoots. It may surprise you, or maybe not. It's a good idea to give Lee Shaver a call. He knows more...

    Birchwood Caseys Perma Blue

It has its place, such as small parts like screws. It's also good for aging parts if it's applied and then rubbed back with steel wool. As for getting a good blue on a barrel I've never been able to make it work like a good rust blue and it can't come close to a rust blue for wear. Others may...

    Spring bear #2

Where abouts in bush Alaska? 41 years in Southeast myself and saw plenty of bears. The nose on that one looks lighter colored than most I've seen. There is a lot of variation in them including the Glacier blue ones and a couple of white bears around Skagway and Haines. There were too many big...

1 part beeswax, 1 part olive oil

I used Crisco forever myself until a friend gave me his lube to try which is 2/1 lard / beeswax. This is for hunting. It's spit for all the match shooting.

Need Help determining size and source for round ball for this beast

Researching my copy of Greener's book "The Gun and it's Development" he mentions a load of 10 or even 12 drams of powder for an 8 bore spherical ball. 10 drams is around 280 grains. That will get you started when you find a 6 bore ball. The recoil is said to be not noticeable when shooting at...

    Aperture sights

I have a shooting buddy who said his groups tightened up considerably after he soft soldered the standing breach to the barrel and didn't remove the barrel for cleaning. Others have said it's a waste of time. I don't have any experience to comment on it myself.

Missing wood between barrel channel and lock inset a problem?

This is one of the reasons I like back action locks. No fouling gets into them.
