Starting to look for a flintlock

I had a good friend that hunted caribou and moose here in AK with a full stock .58 cal rifle. I can't remember for sure if it was flint but I think it was. I never could quite muster up the guts to go into the alders with a single shot muzzle loader especially while deer hunting Kodiak and the...

Well that didn't go as planed.

I've had to make a several new triggers out of tool steel for a couple of percussion revolvers and single shot hand guns because the factory offerings were to soft and wouldn't hold an edge even after repeated case hardening. One each in a 80's purchased Pietta Colt 60 and 58 Rem. Neither one...

    BLOWN OUT PATCH'S

That is true that a ball will sometimes stay in a group with a less than perfect patch but I'm quite sure that blown patches are more often than not responsible for the fliers and the shot sent with a blown patch that stayed in the group was more a matter of wibbles compensating for wobbles when...

    Barrel Rebore Question

Your post has revived a long standing interest and dream of mine to make rifle barrels. Not in any kind of production sense but just a few of my own to learn the nuance of deep hole boring and single point hook rifling. I have bored/reamed out and relined quite a few barrels but have never set...

    What is your procedure……

Locks are are as different/individual as people an one wants to choose and tune those that have a pleasant, reliable disposition. An ornery, disagreeable lock is about as welcome as the same traits in a person. When match shooting I pressure flake after every relay as this promotes consistency...

Ignition speed between flint and percussion

That is true of casual BP shooters but top competitors know there is a percussion advantage and will never use a flint gun against percussion when all the marbles are at stake.

    What Stain for Tiger Maple?

I never cared for the traditional dark look of Aqua Fortis and much prefer the red high lights of Winchester Red stain which leaves a much brighter look but still accentuates the tiger strips.

Ignition speed between flint and percussion

I think that is because flint shooters have learned they have to pay more attention to details to experience reliability than do percussion shooters.

    BLOWN OUT PATCH'S

I'd seat a patched ball as you normally do (purposely dry ball) pull it and see if the patch is muzzle cut or land cut. I don't think the rifling in a TC barrel is deep enough to cut a .015 patch so it must either be muzzle crown cut or gas blow by. My guess is the later.

Is it true the new Colt signature series is Italian made?

I know a fella that has several still full cans of Herter's Sperm Whale oil from when it was available I think for gun lubrication.

    BLOWN OUT PATCH'S

Yeah, both my .45 cal match guns ( one flint the other underhammer percussion) with 1-60 pitch like the same ball diameter and patch thickness with a 65 grain charge of 3F.

Should have been a Walker Wedding but couldn't get it under my suit vest !

Yes, God is good to me and my house !

Ignition speed between flint and percussion

My contention is that if a person can shoot a flint gun well then they can shoot any gun well !

    BLOWN OUT PATCH'S

Ooops , sorry I didn't catch the patches on the second photo ! I use tight weave cotton shirt felt from old work shirts .018 thick. It's one of the best materials for patches I have ever used after trying denum, drill, pillow ticking and what have you. I usually start with a good barrel lapping...
